A Possible 2601 Collection
Might the writing from this course someday become a collection about 2601? Possibly. That is a decision for later — and one we make together.
This course does not commit anyone to a book. Its publication project is individual: each writer revises one essay and, if they wish, sends it to a magazine or journal (see Sending Your Work Out).
How We Will Decide
Depending on how the course goes, at our last session (Session 12) we will talk together about whether the group would like a follow-up course devoted to writing a collection about 2601 — and, if so, what exactly that collection would be about. There is no obligation for anyone.
Some Shapes It Could Take
- A building biography. The life of 2601 from the Baldwin roundhouse to today, told by many residents (see Session 10).
- Arrivals. How each of us came to live here.
- The History of Shelter. Essays in conversation with the twelve panels of the lobby mural.
- The people who keep it running. Portraits and oral histories, with every subject’s approval.
- One year at 2601. A calendar of a single year in the building, month by month.
What to Do Now
Keep every page you write about 2601 in its own folder. Whatever we decide, those pages are yours.
